The Ritz – Afternoon Tea at its best

The Ritz – Afternoon Tea at its best

In this post we will be sharing our Champagne Afternoon Tea experience in one of the most elegant and beautiful hotels not only in London, but in the entire world.

A bit of history

The Ritz first opened its doors in 1906, and has always been considered one of the greatest hotels in the world. It was conceived by the visionary hotelier César Ritz – considered “King of hoteliers, and hotelier to Kings” – who wished to create a hotel with character, elegance and an atmosphere where guests would be pampered and expectations surpassed. That is why no expense was spared for the construction of its magnificent interiors and lavish furnishings.

A tour of the hotel

Upon arrival at The Ritz, the first thing that caught our eye was the majestic lobby. We had to stop to appreciate the stunning surroundings and the elegant deco, before taking a walk through the Long Gallery that runs the length of the hotel.

After our brief stroll, we were welcomed by Aidan, the Duty Manager for the evening, who took us for a proper tour of the hotel. We walked again through the warmly decorated lobby up to the first floor, where he showed us the Trafalgar Suite, set for the famous scene of the romantic comedy ’Notting Hill’ where Robert interviews Anna Scott for ‘Horse and Hound’.

What a wonderful surprise! After having watched this movie dozens of times, it felt so strange to actually be exactly where Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts were standing.

Afternoon Tea

Our afternoon tea was in The Palm Court, a striking area beautifully designed. Its decorative features include floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls, the fabulous ‘La Source’ fountain and breath-taking floral displays.

The atmosphere is very sophisticated and the music of resident pianist Ian Gomes – together with the glittering chandeliers and elegant mirrors of The Palm Court – makes it quintessentially British.

We were looked after by the afternoon tea connoisseur ‘Giando’, who showed us through their wide selection of fine loose leaf teas. We decided to go for the Dragon Pearls – A silver needle tea from Fujian, hand-rolled and delicately scented with Jasmine flowers – and the Ritz Chai – a blend of Assam and Chai spices that has been crafted in-house by the Master of Tea.

Our teas came with a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked warm scones and a range of delicate pastries and tea cakes. How beautiful are these macarons?

After having managed to eat all of these goodies, it was time for us to head home. We can firmly say that the Champagne Afternoon Tea at The Ritz was an experience to remember, made special by the sophisticate atmosphere, attentive staff and delicious food and tea.
